Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival

Founded 2006Usually late November to early December (about eight days)Empire XXI Cinema, Yogyakarta

A festival dedicated to Asian cinema, championing Southeast Asian and Indonesian independent films, programmed in partnership with NETPAC (the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema).

The festival

Founded in 2006 by Indonesian auteur Garin Nugroho, JAFF has grown from a grassroots, volunteer-driven event into one of Indonesia’s leading platforms for Asian cinema. It has partnered with NETPAC since its first edition and is recognized as a key home for Southeast Asian independent film; its 20th edition in 2025 screened well over 200 films.

Worth knowing

The inaugural 2006 edition nearly fell through after a major earthquake struck Yogyakarta, but organizers pressed on — an origin story that became part of the festival’s identity. Its activities now include the JAFF Market and JAFF Archive.

How to attend

The public buys screening tickets online; recent editions have sold tickets through the TIX.ID platform, with sales opening shortly before the festival begins.
